Make a difference by helping build a healthy, sustainable food system while reduce waste. Join us in teaching kids and adults how to garden for health and food security and how to compost & recycle to reduce waste.

Program description:
Our mission is to teach kids, low income adults and veterans how to grow healthy, organic food to enhance food security, recycle and compost to build rich soil and to reduce waste. The participants will learn sustainable growing practices, nutrition, food preparation, & care of the environment. The food grown will be shared by participants and donated to schools and food banks.

We are seeking a person who is passionate about growing food and who loves working with kids and adults. The focus is on growing food, nutrition, garden science, composting, recycling & local food systems. Lesson plans include soil science, decomposition, organic gardening, integrated pest management, farm-to-table, healthy food choices, food preparation and cultural uses of food.

The member will:

*Help the school garden/compost coordinator in garden and compost education for
students in grades K-12 and adults. Duties include research, class preparation &
teaching. Educational experience is an asset.
*Help with garden preparation, planting, weeding, watering, maintenance, harvesting &
food preparation. Gardening or farm skills are an asset.
*Help set up and monitor the school composting and recycling project.
*Collect data and compile statistics in garden production, donations of produce, waste
reduction, volunteer hours & participants in programs.
*Help with community outreach to build support and partnerships with parents,
teachers, school staff, organizations, business community & multi-generational
community members. Help recruit, train and supervise volunteers. Skill and
confidence building with volunteers and participants will be on going. The member
should have strong leadership skills & be organized. Good communication skills and
computer skills are necessary. Any skills creating promotional materials including
brochures, blogs, web sites, short videos are an asset.

Position Requirements:
*Gardening and/or agricultural experience.
*Ability to work with diverse groups including school staff, parents and community members.
*Experience working with kids and adults
*Good communication skills
*Computer Skills
*Ability to work independently.
*18 -24 years of age

Preferred Qualifications:
*Teaching experience and/or background in education.
*A passion for local food and sustainable food systems.
*Garden education or environmental education experience.
*Video filming and/or editing skills helpful
* Website and promotional materials experience helpful

If only I was this age, this is exactly what I have done and will continue to do. I will volunteer to help with this project, and would like to see community gardens happen in every neighborhood. Imagine that, all local food grown in a neighborhood plot and folks getting to know each other of weeds and veggies and fruits. Life is good in the garden! GROW Organic!!!
