Wanna Start Something

Got a kid? Want a kid? Am a "kid" (read: Life-long-learner)?

Who are your educators? Who are the progressives and alternatives that make it work for you in Jefferson County?

Think local, grow local, learn local, be local. Are you Jefferson-literate? What should be the indicators of a local (knowledge, skills, etc)?

How is Jefferson Co. a hot-bed of progressive education and educators?

Just a few questions to ponder...

Always two there are, no more, no less: a master and an apprentice.

Great questions, Brian!

Growing up here there were several educators who changed my life: many are still working in JeffCo. Marci Van Cleve, Kit Pennell, and Nita Wester at the Chimacum Pi Program. Julie Marston with the Jefferson Community School. Sue Phillips and Joanne Schmidt at Chimacum High School. Robert Force at WSU Learning Center.

Local literacy should include knowing a selection of the best trails, best natural landmarks, best beaches, and best places to buy local food...(farms, delis, or pubs all count!) Know the local salmon streams. Know the names of the tribes that traditionally made this place home. Know at least one wild thing that you can eat safely from the forest, and one from the shoreline. Know one story from an old-timer. Know one local kid under 10.

Initial thoughts, at least...

What do you think?

This is a great start to the discussion; let's bring more folks into it. I really think for young folks to think of this as a place to raise a family and be active members of the community, these questions need to be addressed. Education is one of the pillars of community. It seems not to be included in much of the conversation. Invite a few friends if you will.
