What is the biggest challenge you face in making it work in Jefferson County?

As a young boy working for his father, I learned quickly that we didn't like working for customers in Town simply because getting paid meant pulling teeth. "You're not the landlord? Well who is?"...
... "oh.. I see.. you live on the couch and the toilet stopped working, so you called us..."

Port Townsend seems to be heavily populated with people who are anything but native. These folks have the loudest voices against industrial growth and expect us to sit back while they run our town (maybe because we do???) Of course, we give to them anyway. It's almost as if the visitors to our town want to lay low and hide out while they discover where they want to go next; perhaps even to find their identities. When they eventually find themselves, they leave, therefore taking all personal growth with them, never to return it to another similar person.

It took nearly 3 years to sell an electrically converted car in Port Townsend. Now see, I was thinking, this is the best place to go green and electric... But what I'm starting to find out, is, that green is ok, so long as it's less expensive. :D

It's difficult to mix positive with my dose of negative. What it looks like, is that our economy in Port Townsend is and always will be fed by our visitors. What we need is something huge.. big big change.. enough to shock some of us from our mental boxes.

With this blog, which I never do, but I feel much better now, why not get the community together on supporting an electric fuel station.. It's not hard to do, other than get the funds to support its installation. Kind of like "If you build it, it will come" sort of thing?

Jordan, thanks for sharing. I think an electric fuel station would be incredible! What exactly does it entail? Do you know of any local, state or federal donors/sponsors that might support its installation? Have you considered doing some research and then presenting to Team Jefferson, the local community development group for Jefferson County (379-5610 x 222 or email [e-mail]) or the Chamber of Commerce (www.ptchamber.org)?

This is exactly what this town and county needs! New ideas (from locals, even better)! New jobs for our changing economy! Let me know where you go with this. It's Time! Let's do it!

Thanks for the reply, and leaving me useful resources to make connections with.

There are many reasons for getting the interest of the community together to build an eFuel Station, besides the fact,... that it puts energy back into small mobility devices from the sun and wind.

Comm-Unity: Last time I witnessed such acts of weirdness, was when we fought helmet laws. -- "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore Toto...." People quite literally came out of the woodwork with masterpiece examples of what a helmet law would do to our freedom as Americans. The way council responded to 6 or 7 hundred plus petitions voting against helmet laws, was as if they had a higher agenda beyond what the people wanted. In fact they did have a higher agenda. The city's insurance dude said "you gotta fix the roads or make them wear helmets..." This act of the people fighting against helmet laws was UNITY, a common unity... Something to believe in and get all riled up about, and it did.. We've got to continue this. However, most of council should have been removed from office at the lame excuses made by Michelle S, that a carbon footprinting program was too expensive, when just prior to this event, the city attorney drafts an ordinance against motorized foot scooters, the most efficient form of transportation known to man to date (electric driven that is). Of course Roderick, Sam, and I attended every meeting to fight this. They didn't win, but neither did we either... It was a big waste of time to change nothing in the advancement of mankind.

Kids love projects... parents do too, but only when their kids are really intrigued by them: We have a big drug problem in Port Townsend. If you haven't noticed, there's not much here to compete with weed. What happened with the High School Electric Car Project? A skate park seems like a good idea, but in my opinion, that was a move of unselfishness for selfish reasons -- kind of like "buying time" kind of thing, rather than deal with the problem. The immediate human based approach to stopping something is "stopping", rather than finding something else to make "Go". A dog doesn't let go of the ball until he's distracted with something he likes.... maybe a bit of bacon? This same approach is old school compared to today's authorities and their behavior... 2 or 3 generations ago, if a police man caught you smokin grass, he'd take ya to your parents and embarrass the hell out of ya. Cause and effect from a couple generations before? The Boiler room has a great mission, but why is it the responsibility of others to volunteer their time to raise your neglected responsibility as a roll model, and as a parent?

Dreams: As a little boy, I dreamed of that fancy red bike.. What else could I dream of? All the other kids had em', but we couldn't afford one. Later I wanted to build my own. I was no longer into the products of others, but into the ideas of what I could do. Starting a simple idea of an eFuel Station would require a donated garage or garage time with lots of hands on involvement for all people, tool learning, crafting, and ingenuity in motion, dreams only left to complete the journey. It's amazing how many more blocks can be made, when just a few are introduced. Drugs do the opposite.

Induced Learning: Fine.. I made this up.. As a mentor or answer-ee, have you ever had to answer a question you didn't know? Some people make things up or get defensive.. I'd rather think most would figure it out before answering. It's an immediate education because of the responsibility to fill a real and sincere wonder with complete understanding. I don't want to be rich, but if I somehow had community support like the Boiler Room, I'd get a big garage and fill it with enough tools to make possible the reversing of our creative dreaming dying a slow death.
